Gilsonite as a Mud Additive: Frequently Asked Questions

Does gilsonite work in water-based mud?
Yes, especially with surfactants. For easy mixing in water, sulphonated asphalt is often preferred.
What mesh size should I use?
About 200 mesh is standard for drilling fluids.
What is a typical dosage?
2–8 lb/bbl, depending on formation and fluid loss target.
Does it affect rheology?
It can slightly increase viscosity. Monitor PV and YP after additions.
Will gilsonite damage the reservoir?
Gilsonite is soluble in many hydrocarbons and can be removed during production. As with any additive, return permeability testing is recommended for sensitive reservoirs.
Does it cause foaming?
Untreated gilsonite rarely foams. Sulphonated asphalt may foam slightly; use a defoamer if needed.
How is it packed?
25 kg bags on pallets, or 1 MT jumbo bags.
Is it hazardous?
It is not classified as dangerous goods for transport in most cases, but fine dust should be controlled. See the MSDS.
How quickly does gilsonite work?
It begins to seal as soon as it reaches formation temperature and is circulated against the wellbore.
Can I add it through the hopper?
Yes, slowly to avoid lumps.
Does it interfere with logging?
Asphaltic additives can affect some log readings; inform the logging company.
How should I store it on the rig?
Keep bags on pallets, covered and dry.
