  • Holiday (spark) testing
  • Adhesion / peel
  • Impact resistance
Gilsonite pallets stretch-wrapped in blue film – pipe coating application

Purpose of testing

Tests confirm that coating materials meet specification and that the applied coating protects the pipe as designed.

Common tests in more detail

  • Softening point shows resistance to flow at service temperature.
  • Penetration indicates hardness.
  • Sag test checks that hot enamel does not run on a vertical panel.
  • Holiday test uses a high-voltage spark to detect pinholes.
  • Peel test measures adhesion to steel.
  • Impact test checks resistance to handling damage.

Acceptance

Every coating specification sets limits for each test. Record results with batch numbers for traceability.
