Slurry Seals and Micro-Surfacing with Gilsonite

Slurry seals and micro-surfacing combine emulsion, fine aggregate and filler.
Gilsonite’s potential role
Can be incorporated into the asphalt before emulsification to increase stiffness and rut resistance of micro-surfacing.
Considerations
Requires compatible emulsifiers and testing.

What slurry seals and micro-surfacing are
Both combine asphalt emulsion, fine aggregate, mineral filler, water and additives, mixed and spread in a thin layer. Micro-surfacing uses polymer-modified emulsions and can fill ruts.
Why stiffness matters
Micro-surfacing on busy roads and in rut-filling must resist deformation. A stiffer residual binder helps.
How gilsonite can be included
Gilsonite is dissolved in the base bitumen before emulsification. The emulsion supplier must confirm stability and breaking behaviour with the chosen emulsifier.
Testing
Mix design tests such as wet track abrasion, loaded wheel test and cohesion development should confirm performance.
