Bituminous Coatings for Sewer and Drainage Pipes
Translate this article:

Concrete and ductile iron sewer pipes can be coated externally with bituminous paints.
Benefits
- Protection against aggressive soils
- Economical
- Easy application
Gilsonite
Increases hardness and chemical resistance of the coating.

Challenges in sewer environments
Soils around sewers may be aggressive, and groundwater can contain sulphates and chlorides. External coatings help protect concrete and ductile iron pipes.
Bituminous external coatings
Bituminous paints applied in the factory or on site provide an economical barrier. Gilsonite increases hardness and chemical resistance.
Internal protection
Interior sewer protection against biogenic acid requires specialised linings such as calcium aluminate mortar, epoxies or plastic liners.
Application tips
- Apply to dry, clean pipe surfaces.
- Ensure full coverage at spigots and sockets.
- Allow adequate drying before stacking.
