Which inks use gilsonite?
Mainly black news, offset and some solvent inks.
Does it dissolve in oil?
Yes, in heated mineral and vegetable oils.
What ash level is needed?
Usually 3% or lower.
Can it be used in colour inks?
No, its dark colour limits it to black.
Is it food-contact safe?
Not without specific regulatory approval for the final ink.
How much gilsonite goes into a news ink?
Often 15–40 % of the formulation as varnish, depending on the recipe.
Why must ink gilsonite have low ash?
Ash particles act as grit, wearing rollers and plates.
Can gilsonite inks be used in UV-curing systems?
Generally not; gilsonite does not take part in UV curing.
Does gilsonite affect drying?
It can slightly slow oxidative drying; adjust driers if needed.
Which grade do you recommend?
Ink & paint grade or micronized gilsonite with low ash.
See ink grade gilsonite and gilsonite in printing inks.
