Gilsonite Storage and Handling Best Practices

Gilsonite is a stable material, but correct storage and handling protect its quality and keep workers safe.
Storage
- Store bags on pallets in a dry, covered area.
- Protect from direct sunlight and heat sources; high temperatures can cause powder to cake.
- Keep away from open flames and ignition sources.
- Do not stack pallets more than two high unless racks are used.
- Keep bags closed until use.
Shelf life
When stored properly in original packing, gilsonite has a shelf life of at least 12 months, and often much longer.

Dust control
Fine powders can form dust. Use local exhaust ventilation at bag-tipping stations, and avoid dry sweeping. Like other fine organic dusts, gilsonite dust can be combustible in high concentrations, so good housekeeping is important.
Personal protective equipment
Workers should wear dust masks, safety glasses and gloves when handling powder.
Handling jumbo bags
Use forklifts with proper lifting loops or frames. Never stand under a suspended bag.
Spills
Collect spilled powder with a vacuum cleaner suitable for dust or by gentle shovelling.
Full safety information is given in the MSDS supplied with every order of gilsonite powder. For packing options, see gilsonite packing options.
