Bituminous Pipe Wrapping Tapes
Translate this article:

Cold-applied tapes are convenient for repairs, fittings and small-diameter pipes.
Construction
Carrier film or fabric plus bituminous adhesive compound.
Gilsonite in the compound
Improves cohesion, softening point and reduces cold flow.

Application
Spiral wrap with overlap over primed surface.
Tape types
- Petrolatum tapes – very conformable, for irregular shapes
- Bituminous tapes – fabric or film carrier with bitumen compound
- Polymeric tapes – PE or PVC with butyl adhesive
Application steps
- Clean the surface and remove rust and grease.
- Apply primer.
- Wrap spirally with 50 % or specified overlap.
- Apply outer protective wrap if required.
Why gilsonite in the compound
Gilsonite reduces cold flow and increases softening point, so the tape compound stays in place under soil load and heat.
Typical uses
Repairs on existing pipelines, fittings, bends and small-diameter pipes.
