Formulation Basics for Gilsonite Pipe Coating Compounds
Translate this article:

Components
- Bitumen (oxidized or penetration grade)
- Gilsonite (5–25%)
- Mineral filler (talc, slate, limestone)
- Optional polymers
Process
Heat bitumen, add gilsonite and dissolve, then add filler with mixing.

Targets
Softening point, penetration and sag resistance per specification.
Example enamel formulation
| Component | Typical range | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Oxidized bitumen | 60–75 % | Binder |
| Gilsonite | 5–15 % | Hardness, softening point |
| Mineral filler | 20–30 % | Reinforcement, sag control |
Process tips
- Dissolve gilsonite fully before adding filler.
- Control temperature to avoid excessive ageing.
- Check sag and penetration on each batch.
Testing
Softening point, penetration, filler content, sag, flexibility and impact at low temperature.
