Gilsonite in Sound-Deadening Materials

Bituminous sound-deadening pads and coatings use fillers and binders to damp vibration.
Gilsonite role
Increases stiffness and heat resistance of the bituminous binder.
Uses
Automotive pads, appliance damping sheets.

How sound deadening works
Vibrating metal panels in cars, appliances and machines radiate noise. Damping materials convert vibration energy into heat, reducing noise.
Bituminous damping pads
Pads made from bitumen, fillers and fibres are heated and bonded to panels. They must stay in place at high temperatures (for example in car roofs in summer) and not become brittle in winter.
Role of gilsonite
Gilsonite raises the softening point of the bituminous binder, preventing the pad from sagging or flowing in heat, while fillers provide mass and damping.
