What colour does gilsonite give?
Black in thick films, brown in thin films.

Which solvents dissolve it?
Aromatic solvents, many aliphatics, and hot oils.

Can it be used in water-based paint?
Yes, through emulsions.

Does it improve corrosion resistance?
It improves barrier properties as part of a complete system.

Which grade should I use?
Low-ash paint grade or micronized grade.

Will gilsonite paints bleed through topcoats?
Bituminous materials can bleed into light-coloured topcoats. Use a barrier coat or aluminium paint first.

How durable are gilsonite coatings outdoors?
They protect well but can chalk under strong UV; use topcoats for appearance.

What dosage is typical?
From 10 % to over 50 % of binder solids depending on the product.

Can I add gilsonite to an existing paint?
Only after compatibility testing; it is best introduced as a pre-dissolved varnish.

Which grade?
