Gilsonite for Parking Lots and Driveways
Translate this article:

Parking lots and driveways suffer from oil drips, sun exposure and turning tires. Gilsonite helps in both the asphalt mix and the surface sealer.
In the mix
A small amount of gilsonite makes the surface stiffer and more resistant to scuffing and indentation from parked vehicles.
In sealers
Gilsonite-based sealers restore the black colour of faded asphalt, fill small surface voids and protect against water and UV.

Maintenance plan
- Clean the surface.
- Fill cracks with a gilsonite-based crack filler.
- Apply sealer every 2–3 years.
Benefits
- Attractive deep black finish
- Longer pavement life
- Lower maintenance cost
Design tips for new parking areas
- Use adequate base thickness for the expected vehicles.
- Ensure good drainage slopes (at least 1–2 %).
- Consider gilsonite-modified surface mix for areas with turning trucks.
Maintenance schedule
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Annually | Crack inspection and sealing |
| Every 2–3 years | Sealer application |
| As needed | Pothole repair, line marking |
A regular programme keeps the surface attractive and avoids early reconstruction.
